They spent their life painting emperors and empresses on silk scrolls that were rolled up and stored in palace closets. One scroll shows Emperor Huizong feeding cranes in his gardens; another has his wife holding a plum branch, both done in such delicate ink that the paint looks like mist. You can still see them today, one hangs in the Palace Museum, Beijing.
