Hishikawa Waō was one of the art names used by the Japanese painter Hanabusa Itchō (1652-1724). Born in Osaka, he trained in the Kanō school under Kanō Yasunobu but rejected its formality to work as a literati painter. In 1698 he was exiled to the island of Miyake-jima for a satirical painting said to mock a shogun's concubine, returning to Edo in 1710, when he formally adopted the name Hanabusa Itchō.
His paintings, occupying a middle ground between the Kanō tradition and ukiyo-e, depict scenes of everyday urban life in Edo with a poetic and less formal touch.
