Ma Hezhi was a Chinese painter active during the mid-twelfth century under the Southern Song dynasty. He earned the jinshi degree and served at the imperial court, where he became a leading figure painter favored by the emperor. He is best known for illustrating the Classic of Poetry and other literary texts, pairing calligraphic passages with narrative scenes.
His figures are drawn with a fluid, undulating line, sometimes called the orchid-leaf stroke, that gives his compositions a soft, rhythmic quality. Among the works associated with him is an illustration of The Later Ode on the Red Cliff, after the prose poem by Su Shi.
