Emperor Huizong (1082-1135) was the eighth emperor of the Song dynasty of China, reigning from 1100 to 1126, and one of the most accomplished artist-rulers in Chinese history. A painter, calligrapher, and poet, he was a devoted patron of the arts who expanded the imperial painting academy and assembled a vast collection cataloged in court inventories. He is associated with refined bird-and-flower paintings and developed a distinctive calligraphic script known as Slender Gold.
His reign ended with the Jingkang Incident, when Jin forces captured the capital and took him prisoner. He died in captivity in the north in 1135.
