Master of the Beguins is the conventional name for an anonymous painter active in France around the middle of the seventeenth century. The name, in French Maitre aux beguins, derives from the distinctive white head coverings, or beguins, worn by women and children in many of the genre scenes attributed to the artist. These paintings show peasants and families in modest interiors and were long associated with, and sometimes attributed to, the Le Nain brothers because of their sober realism and quiet dignity.
The body of work has been linked by some scholars to the Flemish painter Abraham Willemsens, although the identification is not universally accepted.
