Robert Fulton (1765 to 1815), the American engineer remembered for developing the first commercially successful steamboat, began his career as a painter. Born in Pennsylvania, he worked in Philadelphia as a portraitist and miniaturist, and by 1785 was listed in a city directory as a miniature painter, producing small portraits on ivory. In 1786 he travelled to London to study under the expatriate American painter Benjamin West, a family friend, and lived in West's household for several years.
Fulton continued to paint and exhibit before his interests turned increasingly toward canals, engineering, and naval invention. West himself painted a portrait of Fulton in 1806.
