Saien Hosai, known by the Chinese name Xiyua Fangqi, was a Chinese painter of the Qing dynasty who became known in Japan during the Edo period. Thought to have come from Jiangsu or Anhui province, he was a merchant who traveled to Japan on several occasions beginning about 1772. He worked chiefly in the bird-and-flower genre, producing ink and color paintings of subjects such as a mynah bird on a plum branch and a pheasant beneath a paulownia tree.
Chinese merchant-painters who visited Japan in this period helped introduce contemporary Qing painting styles to Japanese artists. His paintings survive in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
