Kano Tanshin (Morimasa) 狩野探信

Kano Tanshin Morimasa (1653-1718) was a Japanese painter of the Kano school, the dominant lineage of professional painters in the Edo period. He was the eldest son of Kano Tan'yu, the most influential Kano master of the seventeenth century, and after his father's death he led the Kajibashi branch of the school in Edo. Working in the established Kano idiom, he painted in ink and color on screens, sliding doors, and hanging scrolls, treating subjects such as landscapes, birds and flowers, and figures from Chinese and Japanese tradition. His role was central to transmitting the Kano style and workshop methods to the next generation.
