This print is a portrait of Jake Tilson, an artist and printmaker. It’s by Frank Auerbach, a German-born British artist known for his intense, repeated studies of a few subjects. Auerbach didn’t use a typical etching needle. Instead, he worked with a screwdriver—flat edge for bold lines, turned sideways for finer details. The print is one of many in the V&A’s collection donated through Marc Balakjian and Dorothea Wight of Studio Prints, who helped share insights on Auerbach’s methods. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum for more on this print and others like it.
