L'Empereur d'Autriche is a 1914 by Auguste Lepère, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This drawing shows two nearly identical soldiers in stiff uniforms, standing at attention beside a tall post with a curved crossbar. Their hats have big, floppy brims, and they hold swords at their sides. In the background, a small boat sits on the shore, and a person is crouched near a bench. The two images look almost like a mirror, but one soldier’s face is blurred or smudged. This might be a trick to show how easily people could be misread or forgotten. Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see this drawing in person.
Louis-Auguste Lepère (30 November 1849 – 20 November 1918) was a French painter and etcher. Lepère is also considered a leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe.
