The Printer is a 1900 by Auguste Lepère, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This drawing shows a person bending over a printing press, arms deep in the machine. The press itself is big and blocky, with thick wheels and a heavy base. The person’s hair is messy, and they’re wearing a loose shirt, while smoke or steam swirls around them. The artist used bold black lines and simple shapes to focus on the hard work and gritty feel of the scene. The colors are muted, with just a few warm spots to highlight the action. Next, check out Auguste Louis Lepère (French, 1849–1918) for more of his striking, everyday scenes.
Louis-Auguste Lepère (30 November 1849 – 20 November 1918) was a French painter and etcher. Lepère is also considered a leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe.
