A watercolour and pen-and-ink drawing by Beatrix Potter from around 1892 depicts three mice seated on Thonet chairs, turning away from their spinning wheels in alarm at a cat’s face visible through a window. The scene corresponds to the line “Pussy passed by, and she peeped in” from the nursery rhyme “Three little Mice sat down to spin.” The work was part of an unpublished booklet Potter prepared around 1892 before adapting one of its designs for *The Tailor of Gloucester* in 1903. The drawing was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1973 as part of the Linder Bequest.
