About this work

This painting shows a brown, dried flower or plant against a beige background. The flower is the main focus, with its petals curled up and its stem visible. The flower appears to be a type of fungus, possibly a mushroom, with a rough, textured surface. The artist has used watercolor to create a soft, delicate effect. The story of this work

Overview

A watercolour drawing over pencil depicts two specimens of a dark brown, horn-shaped fungus on a substrate of grass and moss. The work was later donated by Leslie Linder to the National Book League in 1970 as part of a collection of Beatrix Potter’s drawings. This selection, known as the Linder Collection, was previously on long-term loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum from 1989 to 2019.
