A Couple Seated among Trees above a Lake is a 1870 charcoal by Alfred Bellet du Poisat, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two people sitting quietly under a cluster of tall, gnarled trees. The branches frame a distant view of a lake and rolling hills, with soft light breaking through the leaves. The ground is rough with rocks and sparse grass, and the whole scene feels still and peaceful. The artist used charcoals to create deep shadows and textures, especially in the bark and foliage. The rough edges and smudged lines give it a sketchy, almost unfinished look. Want to know more? Check out the technique: scumbling.
