This painting shows a man in a dark coat sitting sideways in a chair. His face looks tired and thoughtful. The background is plain. The artist used watercolor but added a thick layer called gouache. That mix of watercolor and gouache lets him paint tiny details on the ivory surface. The ivory was cut small, just big enough for this one head. The colors stay bright even after two hundred years.
