History & Provenance
Earlier ownership is traced to William Beckford at Fonthill Abbey, with later passage through Thomas Glen Arthur in Ayr and dealers including M.
The work, an oil portrait of Eleonora di Toledo painted by Agnolo Bronzino in 1560, entered the collection of William Beckford and remained at Fonthill Abbey before passing by inheritance through the Dukes of Hamilton (Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke; his son William Alexander Anthony Archibald Douglas, 11th Duke; and his grandson William Alexander Louis Stephen Douglas‑Hamilton, 12th Duke). A sale at Christie, Manson & Wood in July 1882 (lot 756) transferred it to the London dealer Colnaghi, from whom it moved through several owners, including Francis Barry, Thomas Glen Arthur, Victor G. Fischer, and Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi, before the Samuel H. Kress Foundation purchased it in 1954; the painting was gifted to the National Gallery of Art in 1961.
The painting is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., as part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection. It entered the Kress Foundation in 1954 following its acquisition from Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi, and was given to the NGA in 1961. Earlier in its provenance, the panel passed through the Hamilton family at Hamilton Palace before appearing at the Hamilton Palace sale conducted by Christie, Manson & Wood in London on 1 July 1882 (lot 756).
It subsequently resurfaced at another Christie, Manson & Woods sale on 3 June 1893 (lot 11), with Colnaghi acting as dealer at various points. The work was also lent by Contini Bonacossi to a 1930 exhibition in London. Earlier ownership is traced to William Beckford at Fonthill Abbey, with later passage through Thomas Glen Arthur in Ayr and dealers including M. Knoedler & Co.
