Forêt is a 1872 ink by Félix-Hilaire Buhot, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a dark, tangled forest. The trees are thick and messy, with lots of lines and shadows. Light barely gets through the branches—just a few spots here and there. The artist used a sharp tool to scratch into the metal plate, creating the rough texture. That’s how the ink stuck to the paper in those jagged lines. Look up etching to see how this technique works.
Félix-Hilaire Buhot (1847–1898) was a French artist, born in Valognes.
