Sentinel Pine is a 1916 ink by George Elbert Burr, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white print of a single pine tree standing alone. The tree’s branches twist sharply against a pale sky, and the ground below looks rough and uneven. In the distance, a small building sits on a hill, with a body of water stretching toward the horizon. The artist used fine lines to show every branch and needle, making the tree look almost three-dimensional. The paper has a textured, aged look, like old paper. This print was made using etching, drypoint.
George Elbert Burr (April 14, 1859 – November 17, 1939 ) was an American printmaker and painter best known for his etchings and drypoints of the desert and mountain regions of the American West.
