Gentleman Viewed from the Front with Hand on Hip is a 1617 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two men in fancy clothes, posed like they’re showing off. One has his hand on his hip, the other leans on a cane. Their hats have big feathers, and their outfits look rich but a little messy. The lines are sharp and scratchy, like someone drew fast. The artist used a technique called *etching*—they scratched into metal plates, then ink filled the lines. That’s why the details look so precise but also a little rough. Next, check out more of Callot’s work to see how he played with light and shadow.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
