Horses Running is a 1622 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a bunch of horses mid-gallop. They’re all in different poses—some rearing up, some kicking dust. The lines are loose and quick, like they were drawn fast. A few horses look wild, with manes flying. The artist packed a lot of action into a small space. Notice how some horses overlap others—it’s crowded but still clear. Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
