Lioness Mourning her Cub is a 1628 ink by Jacques Callot, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white drawing shows a lioness sitting on a grassy bank, her head tilted back as if howling. Near her paws lies a small cub, still and still-looking. In the background, a bare tree stands on a hill, and wavy lines suggest water and sky. The lioness’s pose and the dead cub’s stillness make the scene feel heavy. This was made using a printing method that lets artists scratch lines into metal plates. Next, check out etching to see how this image was made.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
