Officer, with Arm Extended, Front View is a 1622 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two men in fancy old clothes, standing with arms wide open. Their coats have big buttons down the front, and their pants tuck into tall boots. Both have curly wigs and mustaches, and they’re smiling like they’re posing for a joke. The lines are scratchy and loose, almost like a quick sketch. This style was common in etchings, where the artist carves into metal plates to make prints. Next, check out the technique: etching to see how these kinds of drawings were made.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
