Tavern is a 1622 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a group of people outside a simple building with a pitched roof. Some are standing, others are gathered around a horse that’s lying on the ground. A tree stands near the center, and a few people lean against it or walk nearby. One person holds a staff, another looks down at the horse, and a woman stands in the doorway of the building. The artist used fine lines to create deep shadows and texture, making the scene feel dramatic. This is an etching, a technique where the image is carved into a metal plate. Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
