The Flageolet Player is a 1622 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a hunched figure playing a small wind instrument, called a flageolet. The person’s hat is tilted sideways, and they’re wearing striped stockings and a loose shirt. Their face looks twisted, like they’re straining to play. The lines are all scratchy and layered, which makes the figure look rough and alive. This style was common in the 1600s for making prints. Next, look up etching to see how artists like this carved images into metal plates.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
