San Giorgio, Venice is a 1883 watercolor by William Callow, a Impressionism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This watercolor shows a quiet Venetian harbor. A small boat with a striped awning glides toward the shore, while a bigger ship sits anchored in the background. On the right, a church with a tall bell tower and a dome stands near the water’s edge. The sky is pale, and the buildings look soft, like they’re seen through a light mist. The artist used loose, sketchy brushstrokes to capture the water and sky, making everything feel slightly blurred. This style was common in Impressionism, where details were often left out to show light and movement instead. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more works like this in person.
The painting depicts the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, marked by the artist's signature and date "Wm Callow 188[3?]" on the front, with the inscription "No 8 St Giorgio. Venice" on the reverse.
