Cardinal Fleury is a 1704 ink by François Chereau I, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a serious-looking older man. He’s wearing a fancy white robe with a high collar and a fur trim around the shoulders. His hands rest on a book or paper, and he has a slight smile. The background is a dark oval shape with some Latin words around the edge. The artist used fine lines to create shadows and textures, like in the folds of the robe. This kind of detailed line work is called *cross-hatching*—layers of lines to make depth.
