Jensen employs delicate gradations of tone to model the face, giving the cheeks and forehead a palpable sense of volume. The portrait entered the collection of Denmark’s national gallery, Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains on display. Jensen, who produced more than four hundred portraits of notable contemporaries, created this piece early in his career, contributing to his reputation as a leading portraitist of his era.

Although Jensen is primarily associated with Danish portraiture, the painting bears hallmarks of German Romanticism, particularly in its emotional restraint and dramatic lighting.
