Aër (Air) is a 1587 ink by Adriaen Collaert, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving depicts a man, possibly a god, surrounded by a circle with cherubs and a landscape. The man is nude, with a cloth draped over his left shoulder, and holds a lizard in his right hand. He stands on a cloud, with his left leg bent and his right arm outstretched. Above him, birds fly in the sky, while below, a cityscape unfolds with mountains in the distance. In the background, a group of people are shown, some of whom appear to be engaged in battle. The overall scene is one of dynamic movement and energy. The use of cross-hatching in this engraving adds depth and texture to the image. To learn more about the artist behind this work, look up Adriaen Collaert.
