Title Page is a 1600 ink by Adriaen Collaert, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image is a busy black-and-white print. Two chubby boys sit on either side of a fancy oval frame. Inside the frame is Latin text. Around them are lots of birds—some perched, some flying. Below, more birds mix with musical instruments and tiny putti (winged baby figures). The edges are packed with swirls and leaves. The text says this is a book about birds. The artist’s name, Collaert, is at the bottom. The whole thing looks like a mix of nature and decoration. Want to know more? Try looking up engraving.
