Norman doorway of St. Mary's Church, Thetford, Suffolk is a 1818 by John Sell Cotman, a Romanticism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This sketch shows an old stone doorway with a rounded arch. The door itself is wooden, weathered, and slightly ajar. Around it, the stone walls look worn, with bits of ivy or plants growing at the base. The artist focused on the texture of the stone and wood, using quick pencil strokes to show light and shadow. This was made in 1818 by someone who loved drawing real places with care. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists build up shading with lines.
