This painting shows a small wooden ship sailing close to shore, its red-brown sails catching the wind. The water is choppy, with whitecaps near the boat’s bow. In the distance, a bigger ship with tall masts sits farther out, while the sky is a mix of pale blues and soft clouds. The artist used light brushstrokes to show the movement of the waves and wind. The colors are mostly muted, but the sails stand out against the calm background. Look up Cotman, John Sell to see how he painted other seascapes.
