This photo shows Fred Charles Hengler, an actor from the 1800s. V&A’s notes say it’s an albumen print on card, a “cabinet card” meant for fans. These cards let people collect portraits of stars at home. Photography was new then, so actors posed in costume for keepsakes. The larger “cabinet card” replaced the smaller “carte de visite” by the late 1870s. Look up Davis next.
