About this work

This photo shows M. Regnier in the late 1800s. It’s a theatrical portrait by V. Plumner, printed on stiff card like a calling card. These small “cartes de visite” were hugely popular back then—people collected them like early trading cards. The photo was made with an albumen print on glass. Back then, glass negatives were new tech. Most actors paid for these keepsakes to share their fame. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The story of this work

Overview

This photograph by V. Plumner from around 1850 depicts actor M. Regnier, produced as an albumen print from a glass negative and mounted on card. It belongs to a collection of theatrical portraits assembled by Guy Little, consisting of both *cartes de visite*—small visiting-card-sized images popular in the 1860s—and larger *cabinet cards*, which were widely collected before being replaced by postcards and studio prints in the late 19th century. The collection was donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum in the early 20th century.
