About this work

This sketch shows four rough, shadowy figures riding horses. The lines are quick and wobbly, like a hasty drawing. One person in the front holds a long stick, and the others wear wide-brimmed hats. The paper looks old and the ink is faded in spots. The artist used only pen and ink, layering lines to build up shapes. This style makes the figures look almost ghostly. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists create depth with lines.
