Four Horsemen is a 1628 ink by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows four rough, shadowy figures riding horses. The lines are quick and wobbly, like a hasty drawing. One person in the front holds a long stick, and the others wear wide-brimmed hats. The paper looks old and the ink is faded in spots. The artist used only pen and ink, layering lines to build up shapes. This style makes the figures look almost ghostly. Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
