About this work

This sketch shows a family outside a rocky tomb. A woman sits nursing a baby, while a man squats nearby, holding a pot. Behind them, the tomb wall is carved with simple figures—some standing, some carrying tools. The scene looks dusty, with pots and a basket scattered on the ground. The artist added faint hieroglyph-like carvings on the tomb wall, mixing real Egyptian styles with his own sketchy style. This was drawn during a trip to Egypt, where artists often copied ancient sites. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more sketches like this.
