Country House with a Ditch is a 1560 ink by Lucas van Doetechum, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white drawing shows a quiet countryside scene. A small house with a thatched roof sits behind a narrow ditch filled with water. Three animals—a cow, a sheep, and a goat—stand or sit at the water’s edge. Trees line the path leading to the house, and a few birds fly in the sky. The artist used fine lines to show details like the texture of the roof and the ripples in the water. This kind of drawing was made by pressing ink into a metal plate.
