Road with Barn and Cottages is a 1676 ink by Johannes van Doetechum the Elder, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a quiet village scene with three small houses and a big barn. A dirt road winds through the middle, and a tiny stream runs alongside it. Two bare trees stand near the houses, and a few people are scattered around—some walking, one sitting by the water. The artist used fine lines to show details like the thatched roofs and the texture of the trees. This kind of printmaking, called *etching*, lets you capture lots of small marks for shading. Look up etching to see how artists like this one made prints with acid and metal plates.
Joannes van Doetecum the Elder (1530 – 1605) was a Dutch engraver-cartographer known for his etched works after genre scenes by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and maps of various cities in the Netherlands.
