Journée du 16 Octobre 1793 [exécution de Marie-Antoinette] is a 1794 ink by Antoine-Jean Duclos, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This scene shows a huge crowd watching an execution. At the center, a woman stands on a platform under a guillotine. Around her, soldiers hold rifles, and a few figures stand on the platform, possibly officials. To the left, a winged figure on a horse raises a sword, while another statue holds a scroll. In the background, a city with buildings and a tall tower stretches out. The woman’s execution is the focus—this was a public event meant to send a message. The artist used sharp lines to show the tension and drama in the air. Next, look up etching to see how this print was made.
