C'est la Paix. Tu vois pas un kepi! is a 1919 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two men in a hat shop. One stands with his back to us, wearing a dark coat and a flat cap. The other sits behind a counter, smiling, with a pile of hats—some stacked, some tipped over—around him. The shop looks simple, with a few shelves and a table holding more hats. The title at the top reads *"C'est la Paix. Tu vois pas un képi?"*—roughly, *"It’s peace. Don’t you see a kepi?"*—a playful jab at the missing military caps. The artist used quick, loose lines to sketch the scene, giving it a lively, almost cartoonish feel. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists build shading with crisscrossed lines.
