Context
Born in London in 1747, Francis Wheatley trained at the Royal Academy Schools and quickly established himself as a prominent portraitist. After a period in Dublin following a personal scandal, he returned to London around 1783. This painting dates from approximately 1785, reflecting his re-establishment in the city's art scene before his election as a Royal Academician in 1791.
