Scheherazade is a 1901 by George Auriol, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
Two women walk side by side in a patterned courtyard. The one on the left holds a large, coiled rope or hose, dressed in a light blue dress with dark dots. The other wears a long gray robe with white circles, her head covered by a veil. Behind them, a tiled wall has a geometric blue-and-white design, and a tree stands in the background. Notice how the artist used bold, flat colors and simple shapes to tell the story. The women’s robes and the tiles create a repeating pattern, almost like a storybook illustration.
