Chinese figures around a basket is a 16 by George Chinnery, a Romanticism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
George Chinnery made this quick sketch in 1842. It’s a drawing, not a painting—just ink on paper. The scene shows a few people standing by a basket, one holding a parasol. This is a small work on paper. It’s a study, not a finished piece. The museum keeps a more polished version of the same scene. Look up the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The drawing depicts a group of figures, one of whom holds up a parasol, gathered around a covered basket, with a more refined version of the same composition also present in the same volume. It is part of an album containing 406 drawings made in Macau, Guangzhou, and Bengal. The album was bequeathed in 1928 by James Orange and includes 93 drawings by George Chinnery, who worked extensively in British India and later in Macau.
