Christ on the Cross is a 1487 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This woodcut shows three figures under a cross. The center figure is nailed to the wood, arms spread wide. To the left, a woman in a long dress clutches her chest, her head bowed. On the right, a bearded man stands with hands folded, looking up at the cross. The background is simple, with just a few lines for the sky. Notice how the artist used sharp lines and simple shapes to show emotion. The figures are stiff but full of feeling, especially the woman’s sorrow. This style was common in early printed art. Look up technique: woodcut to see how this image was made.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
