Saint George is a 1475 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a knight on horseback, sword raised, fighting a dragon. The knight wears armor and a halo, while the dragon is curled around a small figure on the ground. The colors are faded but include reds, greens, and browns. The scene is framed by a thick black border. The image is a woodcut, meaning the artist carved the design into wood and then printed it. This method was common before photography. Check out more about the technique: woodcut.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
