The Stoning of Christ is a 1445 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows three figures in a tight space. The two on the left stand close together, one holding a stick. The third figure is bent forward, arms raised, as if in pain. The background has a rough, blocky look with a red border and a faded gold arch above. The word "Alexe" is written at the top, but it’s unclear what it means here. The colors are flat and bright, like someone added them by hand after the print was made. This is an example of the technique: woodcut.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
