About this work

This print shows two different scenes on each side. One side has a colorful scene of an election, with a carriage and horses. You can see the details of the people and the carriage, it's quite busy. The other side shows a scene of giants and gods, it's a bit chaotic. The print is interesting because it has two very different scenes, showing the artist's range. The artist used a lot of detail and color to make the scenes come alive. To learn more about this style of printmaking, look up the technique: sfumato.

The story of this work

Overview

The double-sided print by James Gillray features two political satires from 1804. On one side, "Middlesex-election. 1804, - 'a Long-Pull, a Strong-Pull,- and a Pill-All-together'" depicts Sir Francis Burdett in an open carriage driven by Horne Tooke, pulled by his supporters during an election. The reverse side shows "Confederated-Coalition; - or - the Giants Storming Heaven; - with, the Gods alarmed for their everlasting-abodes." Both prints were published in London by Hannah Humphrey.
