About this work

You see three small goldfinches perched on fruit branches, a larger bee-eater bird, plums, a peach, a pear, a quince, and a fig all arranged on a plain brown background. Garzoni painted this on vellum—a smooth animal skin—so the colors stay bright and sharp. She worked for scientists and nobles, blending exact detail with quiet beauty. Few women artists were known in 1600s Italy, but she earned respect for these careful studies. Look up other still lifes by Giovanna Garzoni (Italian, 1600–1670) to see more of her delicate work.
