The Knowledge of God and the Seven Cardinal Virtues: Prudence - Prudencia is a 1535 by Sebald Beham, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a winged figure holding a round mirror in one hand and a sword in the other. The figure is standing on a rocky ground, with one foot on a small mound. Their hair is tied back, and they’re dressed in flowing robes. The word *PRUDENCIA* (Spanish for "prudence") is written beside them, suggesting this is an allegory for the virtue of caution. The mirror and sword might symbolize looking ahead while staying strong. Next, check out the technique: chiaroscuro to see how artists used light and shadow like this.
Sebald Beham (1500–1550) was a German painter and printmaker, mainly known for his very small engravings.
