Eider Duck is a 1835 ink by Robert Havell Jr., a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows three eider ducks in a marshy setting. The duck on the left has gray and white feathers and is standing still. The middle duck, with brown and white feathers, is reaching toward the third duck, which has a mix of white and dark feathers and is half-submerged in the water. Tall green reeds surround them, and the sky is a pale blue in the background. Notice how the artist used fine lines to show texture in the feathers and plants. This makes the ducks look almost real. Next, look up engraving to see how artists like this one created detailed prints.
The Havell family of Reading, Berkshire, England, included a number of notable engravers, etchers and painters, as well as writers, publishers, educators, and musicians.
