This painting shows a jumbled, colorful scene of buildings and trees. The shapes are pushed together, some leaning or stacked oddly. Bright reds, purples, and blues clash with pale yellows and greens. Lines crisscross everywhere, making it hard to tell where one thing ends and another begins. The artist didn’t try to make things look real—they’re more like blocks and slashes of paint. The trees have sharp, almost angry branches, and the buildings look like they’re made of flat, uneven pieces. If this style intrigues you, look up Hodgkins, Frances.
